the Incredible story behind the picture from 2006
Mountain Gorillas are extremely dangerous animals living in Rwanda at high altitudes (2500-4000m). There are only about 1000 of them left.
These areas can be visited only with the special permission of the Government of Rwanda. I happened to be one of the first lucky photographers to catch these beautiful animals on an camera from a mere few meters of distance. Up to today, there are very few photographers, who were honored to be given this privilege.
However, getting official permission is far from being enough to actually get close to these beautiful animals. Only locals can help to find and approach the gorillas. They are almost living in symbiosis, locals can even communicate with them in ‘gorilla language’.
It’s exciting and terrifying at the same time to stand only a couple of meters away from these animals. You always have to move around looking downward because if you look into their eyes they will attack you.
One of my craziest experiences was when – even with the help of the locals and keeping all the rules – one of the Gorillas ran toward me and slapped me because she was protecting her baby. I flew like 2 meters and almost crapped myself, but at the same time, it was a beautiful and enlightening experience.
Regardless of their size and strength, gorillas can be killed by the simplest human virus. People, therefore, have been wearing masks for decades here. Rules are so strict that you can’t even throw away an apple core in the forest.
In Memoriam Dian Fossey (1932-1985)
These pictures were inspired by Dian Fossey, who lived with these Mountain Gorillas for 20 years and was killed by poachers for her actions against illegal hunting. Visiting her grave, next to her favorite Gorilla’s resting place was truly an emotional experience.
